Chitwan National Jungle Park is about a 6 hour car ride south of Kathmandu and is situated near the Indian/Nepal border. The park contains wild tigers, crocodiles, deer, sloth bears and the single horned rhino. The use of elephants is highly pragmatic as the park is filled with natural predators and the use of elephants helps protect the many tourists which visit each year.
My personal experience was during the winter month of January which is the dry season in Nepal. Although the average jungle lodge stay is 3 days I myself was pulled out after only day and a half due to an impending general strike in the area may have hindered exiting the jungle lodge where I was staying.

Pulled out of the Jungle early due to looming strike

| My safari consisted of seeing on single rhino in the distance standing like a cement statue. It was motionless listening I presume to our elephant and riders. In total I spent about 5 hours in total over two trips on the elephant. Getting half decent video while sitting on the ass end of an elephant is even more difficult than from within a car on Nepal’s dilapidated roads. Regardless tramping through the jungle on the back of one of these wondrous beasts was a highlight of my trip. Do not even think of heading to Nepal without making a visit to the Chtiwan National Jungle Park. |
